(no subject)
I am really bad at blogging. I can only blog if I feel funny or witty, and right now I feel like neither. Basically I'm doing this because I realized I haven't posted in a really long time, and... I don't know I guess I'm feeling some weird obligation to livejournal. What I really should be feeling obligation to is this email I need to write to set up a meeting with a student counselor, but I don't have the strength to composedly explain my weird question in Swedish. It is SUCH a chore sometimes with this language that I just want to scream at all of these seemingly insignificant day-to-day things that are NOT insignificant to me, but rather make my life hellishly difficult. I have developed this scary loyalist feeling for the english language recently because of this. I seriously think that English is THE PERFECT LANGUAGE. Just let me be completely ethnocentric here and ask WHY would anyone want to speak anything else?!!
You know, what really gets me though? This atttitude that scene kids seem to effortlessly emit about how being bilingual is awesome, great, grand, and fucking wonderful... something to acquire and show off to your friends at parties like a piercing or a tattoo. "Oh yeah, I speak French!" You know what I think? Half the people out there who claim to be bilingual are full of shit. Just because you took a language in high school or a few courses at college does NOT make you bilingual! Go try working in different language, or going to school and writing exams and research papers, or making business phone calls! It just bugs me so much when so many people out there talk about it like its NOTHING. What's worse is when these assholes diss us REAL language conquerers like its something that "they can do too, of COURSE!", ´no wait, better yet, "Well I speak 3-4-5 languages!!" Are you kidding yourselves??? Seriously! This applies especially to those who haven't even lived in a country where language is normally spoken. Get out of your fantasy world and stop wasting everybody's time!!!
