So I talked to the Parentals on the phone last night, because they were worried I'd dropped off the face of the earth or something like that, because they hadn't heard from in over a week....my dad casually mentions that he'll be flying to Mississauga for a business conference thing at the end of the month.... he began joking that i should go into to Toronto to see him, until he realized that it would make more sense to just rent a car and come out here to see my new house, the campus and meet Bradford for the first time.
BUT THEN I realized that we have RLS training that afternoon... the one G.D. day that its a 1p.m. start and short training lol.... so I wrote a proposal to miss it.....
Dear Senior RLS:
I am submitting a request to miss staff training on Sunday March 25th for personal reasons. I am making this request since I found out today, Monday March 12th, 2007, that my Dad will be in Toronto for a business conference on Sunday, March 25th, 2007. My Dad’s schedule has allowed for some free time before his conference begins on Monday during which he hopes to come spend the afternoon/evening visiting me. Since I am from Nova Scotia, seeing anyone in my family is something out of the ordinary. I have recently accepted summer jobs and therefore will not be going home during the summer, most likely until next Christmas, which would be an entire year since I was last home and saw anyone.
I would really appreciate the opportunity to spend some quality time with my dad. He has not been to St. Catharine’s since he moved me here in first year, and he expressed an interest in seeing the area and the house that I will be renting beginning in May. He plans to arrive here at noon, and I’d like to be able to give him a tour of the school, (since I actually know my way around now), and after all, he is the one paying for me to study here. He has also offered to take Mike (my boyfriend) and I out to a dinner at the Keg. This will be the first and likely only occasion for him to meet Mike, which is very important to him and of course to me as well. My dad has always been very involved in my life, and being so far away has proved to be somewhat of a challenge in this area for both of us.
I think that an opportunity to spend quality time with my Dad would give me the chance to reenergize, something that most people have had the opportunity to do by going home. I was not able to go home over reading week or any other time besides Christmas, unlike a lot of staff. I think that it would benefit me not only emotionally, but also academically and professionally. I sincerely believe it would give me the energy and encouragement that I need to finish off the year on the most positive note possible, because this is something so wonderfully unexpected for me.
I fully understand the importance of submitting a proposal in advance and in turn the likelihood of being denied permission to miss the training in respect to this. Under the circumstances, only finding out this information in the evening of March 12th, it was impossible to submit anything prior because I had no idea it would be happening. If I had had control over the situation, I would have made a conscious effort to provide much more notice, instead of only one week. Upon learning that my dad would be coming to visit, I immediately told Adam and as well Jessie and began writing this request, to show as much initiative as possible in this situation, because I feel this is very important to me.
To ensure that I do not miss the content of the training day, I will meet with Adam Hogan to have him fill me in on everything that I missed, as well as other staff members. I would be willing to do something to make up the time/information missed if necessary.
I’d like to apologize again for the short notice, but hope that you will really take into consideration the importance of this rare opportunity for me, and see that this is important to not only myself, but to my dad as well.
Thank you for you time and consideration
Sincerely,
Kate Clarke
I'm really excited to see my dad.... and it should be a totally fun afternoon, showing him around, because the last time he was here, we were both fumbling around, getting lost in Mac Chown :S.... and he wants to go to dinner at the Keg! :)
I've sent Hogan the proposal, so hopefully all goes well. If not, I'm going to be riding the bitter bus to places the DoR does not want to go....
So we shall see!
