just for saraline

so i figure that saraline is the only person who still reads my livejournal (or would read it if i ever actually posted in it), so this one's for her.

i'm finally getting back into theatre again and it feels spectacular. my goal over the next year or so is just to get involved in as much theatre as humanly possible even if it drives me bananas, with the hope that in the end i'll have such a kick ass resume that no one will be able to refuse me.

so, right now i'm finishing up with a one act play for a theatre festival. it's kind of a neat concept. the play is written specifically for the festival and then performed by six different acting troupes from around western ontario. the goal is to give new writers/directors/actors etc, a venue and an opportunity to schmooze and network (which is almost as important as talent in the theatre world).
anyway, the premise of the play is that six local actors receive mysterious letters in the mail inviting them to an audition. they are instructed to arrive dressed as their favourite character (which should make for some interesting theatre because each troupe will undoubtedly choose different "characters" for their character to come as). they arrive at the audition location and find a video and a series of notes telling them what to do. it's predictable, but funny at times. i've chosen Cleopatra as my costume cause my character is a provocative flirt and i figured that fit well, plus i get a pet snake prop and fantastic cleavage, which is always fun (plus, slutty characters are always a good time, especially when they are so far removed from your personality). the rest of the characters in our version of the play are; Hamlet (but that's the one constant character for all six acting troupes), Brick from Cat on A Hot Tin Roof, Little Bo Peep (complete with sheep and crook, which is fantastically funny), the Grand Vizer (from Aladdin i guess), then a lovable street urchin (not sure who in their right mind would pick "street urchin" as their favourite character, but do to a cast change late in the game, that's just what happened...weird...).
anyway, the festival is this weekend and it should be a lot of fun. but there's a serious amount of schmooze time. the schedule goes something like this: registration, opening ceremonies, bar opens, schmooze time, first performance, adjudication, schmooze time, second performance, ajudication, schmooze time, sleep, breakfast, third performance, ajudication, bar opens, schmooze time, fourth performance, ajudication, schmooze time, lunch, schmooze time... etc, etc, until dinner/dance/karaoke/awards baqueet/schmooze time to end it all. (really, that whole bit was just so i could repeatedly type "schmooze").
so there you have it!

i also have two more auditions in the next three weeks, which is exciting because we all know how much i love auditions (i know it seems like i'm being sarcastic there, but it's true, i love auditions...honest).
this sunday i'm auditioning for Closer by Patrick Marber, a brutal anatomy of modern romance, where a quartet of strangers meet, fall in love, and become caught up in a web of desire and betrayal (stolen from the audition notice, not my words at all). it was made into a movie in 2004, with jude law, natalie portman, clive owen and julia roberts.
then in mid-august, i'm auditioning for some halloween-type shows (again, info is stolen from audition notice);

THE COALSHUTTLE INCIDENT - A Jazz Age murder mystery to take place in November in London's beautiful Elsie Perrin Williams Estate

SPIRITS OF PETERSVILLE - A new Halloween project involving the art of the story-teller: five extended monologues involving a bone whistle, a succubus, the ghost of a legless hobo, a tulpa, and a possessed gerbil.

anyway, it's exciting that there's so much going on in london. i honestly had no idea. and in truth, i'm a little angry at myself for never taking advantage of all the theatre here in all my years of residency. but all that is in the past and i'm making the most of it now so that's really all that matters. =)
