Last night, the whole family (including myself) went to a sort of concert thing at the base. It was called a Tattoo, because in the Netherlands when it was time to call the troops in from the taverns and what not, they would send out a drummer. The drummer would signal the bartenders of the time "den doe tap too". In English that means turn off the taps. So, it quickly changed from "Tap Two", to "Tattoo". Anyway, it was really neat. They brought in the fife and drum corps from Colonial Williamsburg, they had a military brass band, there were fireworks and a bagpiper and even planes flying in formation and solo. The plane was so loud!! I had no idea they were that loud! The band played the Anthem, Stars and Stripes Forever, all of the military theme songs(ending of course with "Off we go...") and they even played some jazz! They played Alexander's Ragtime Band and that song Glen Miller's famous for(or at least I always associate with him) that goes kind of like 'ba da da DA DA'. I don't know if you can tell from that what song it was, but I don't know the name of it. They had at one point a fog machine and some lights, so you could only see the silhouette of four men in period uniforms representing the soldiers from the Air Force who've died in the wars. Some of them are so young. I can't even imagine preparing to die at the age of 22(that was the youngest that they mentioned). Some died who were even younger! Now some people don't even seem to care...
Anyway, I really enjoyed it. It was much better than any Independence Day celebration I've ever been to, or even seen on t.v.
