MOM: So we took (my nephew) to see, in 3-D, that movie... Guardians of the Universe.
ME: Oh yeah? Fun, right?
DAD: ....
MOM: Well, there was a bunch of gratuitous violence.
(ME, internally: And this is why I gave my brother SUCH A LOOK when he suggested she'd like Game of Thrones...)
ME: Mmm.
DAD: It was kind of... action action action, change scene, take a breath, action action action...
MOM: But I liked the raccoon. And the tree. For being a tree who only said I am Groot, he was very emotionally expressive.
ME: The raccoon and the tree were pretty great.
(She also thought Chris Pratt's performance was good, the scene at the end with the dance-off was funny, and Drax's makeup much have been - she did not of course use this word - a bitch to deal with every day. I told her the story about Zoe Saldana and her green dog, which she appreciated.)

Since I don't think I ever actually posted about GotG: I enjoyed it but felt that Gamora got kind of a raw deal. You can't just say she's a living weapon who never fails a mission and then have her taken down by everyone and their elderly great-uncle, movie! Also I felt like there was a PG adventure movie that was desperately trying to get out - every now and then they'd be like "gotta say fuck to keep the PG-13!" but really I don't think any of that particularly contributed to the story. I mean, I don't know that it would actually have been PG, but there was some "adult" stuff tacked on that was really unnecessary.
(Like everyone else, I now know that Groot is the best.)
