Computer question for the hivemind

Oct 24, 2009 19:14

My desktop is, oh, four or five years old, I think, and over the past six months or so it's slowed significantly. I've run a full virus scan and defragged, no improvement, and my spyware detector thingie hasn't given me any warnings either. I have 512 MB of RAM. So the question is: What's the likelihood that it's just slowing down because I've got updated software, etc., and not enough RAM to let it run happily? And if the answer is "good," how difficult would it be to upgrade that myself? Assume that I am not alarmed by a physical switchout with clear instructions but would find having to actually understand any of the reasoning behind the instructions stressful.
