Waiting in Tim Hortons while the Fusion gets a safety inspection up the street. It's a chilly, drizzly morning, but the walk was not unpleasant. I put on a peasant skirt today because I got my favorite jeans extremely muddy gardening yesterday. And by my favorite jeans, I mean the jeans Ash is letting me borrow because I grew out of most of my others this winter and tore a huge hole in my other favorites.
The car is somewhat problematic. It has lots of noises and small things wrong with it that I'm annoyed by. I remind myself when I turn on the seat heaters that this would not be possible in the Spectra, but then the heating doesn't kick in by the time we reach the other side of town.
The deal is done though. I got $2,000 USD for the old car and she'll be sending more for the winter tires when she has it. Plus that helps my cousin because now her employee will be somewhat more reliable, not depending on the bus or foot power anymore.
I miss him though. I didn't even notice quirks. He was just mine and he was good except when the battery got too cold. I spent so much time on the road going back and forth to Buffalo that he was a second skin. In the Fusion I have to think. I don't know my size. I don't know my blind spots. I don't know my pickup or whether the transmission is supposed to sound or jerk like that.
After I get the inspection, I go over to the service station and register her as mine.
Hercule is gone. Keighty hadn't even heard of Poirot. Newt is here. Ash and I played with the idea of getting me a vanity plate for her. I settled on Mostly as in "They mostly come at night, mostly." We also talked about covering the hood in a xenomorph decal to cover up some of the white--I hate white cars. But I feel hesitant to putting my mark on her still.
The deed is done, but I'm not content with the swap.
No, Hercule didn't go for his full market value based on Kelly Bluebook or craigslist. Yes, it was a rushed affair and you didn't get a proper goodbye. But you helped a young woman in need of transport, you got more money that Ash's parents expected you to, and you got gifted a free car. You can stop looking the gift horse in the mouth and accept it.
