This week has been a week of The Like! On Tuesday, we went to see them at an instore in Pure Groove records and it was really good. When I got there they were eating their dinner and talking about what they'd been doing in the day - apparently from what I could hear they had lots of pictures taken with a Queen's Guard (one of
these guys), as one does in London and kept asking about the hat and eventually he broke character and said that it was bloody hot. Naughty guard! They're supposed to ignore people entirely. Z had once again forgotten to put her skirt on and Tennessee is about as tall as I am - I didn't realise she was that tall, just taller than the others. At one point before the gig He's Not a Boy came on on the speakers and they all laughed and then looked a bit embarrassed. Hee.
The set was really good. They didn't really talk, just played straight through, but they seemed genuinely pleased to be playing. Z was boogying around like a go go dancer and it was really cute. She also got excited at the end because the place was selling tokens for their single (as it's not out yet) and she said we should all buy it. I would have done, but the shop only sells vinyl and as I can't play it, it seemed silly. I LOVED the new songs - the trouble in paradise one I've heard before somewhere was really really good and there was one that seemed to be about one night stands or staying out all night partying. There was a lyric about "tell me what's your name and where we are" or something and the chorus went "time to do the walk of shame, hide your face the night was calling/day is dawning" or something. Z looked gleeful singing it. Other than that, they played all the MySpace ones except Narcissus in a Red Dress and a few more new ones that I liked but can't remember from one listen. They messed up a few times but dealt with it well, and it was only in intros so it didn't matter too much. The only downside was from where I was sitting Tennessee was half behind a pillar and half behind Z. :( The perils of loving the drummer, sadly.
Day two of The Like started with an epic bus journey across London. Doors were at 7.30 and we arrived at about 8.20 expecting at least some background music. Nope, completely silent with hardly anyone there, and chairs around the edge of the room. We all sat around and it felt quite a lot like an awkward school disco! Eventually they put on some music and it was awesome! Hits of my early teenage years, including Ash, Me Me Me, Elastica, Blur, Cast, Supergrass, Sleeper and Bis. That made twice this week hearing Candy Pop - I've not heard that for years before that! Anyway, we were sitting around for a while (there ended up being no support - don't know what happened there) and watching all the photographers take up the front of the stage. Seriously, it was a tiny venue and there were at least 10 official photographer types! Weird. About 20 minutes before the band appeared some crazy drunk woman came over, stole the seat of one of the girls sitting next to us, nearly fell on the other girl, and kept talking to us. She told us (several times) that Laena went out with her cousin so she'd been out to dinner with them all. Apparently the other three were rude and arrogant, but to be fair if she was acting that way at dinner I don't blame them for being rude! But we were rescued from having to talk to her for too long by the arrival of the band! They did go onstage in the middle of an Echobelly song, but I suppose I can forgive them - it was their gig after all.
They played mostly the same songs as on Tuesday, unsurprisingly. We did get Narcissus in a Red Dress this time, though. I don't really know what to say about the gig itself! They sang songs I like and sang them well and were a bit more gussied up than before. I shuffle danced a bit and Z got excited about their single being out soon again. I took some pictures, which are just down there, below the cut. Z seriously knows how to work the camera - she was doing good dramatic eyes. Laena dances too much for me to get very good shots of her, but I tried, Annie hides in the darkness a bit and Tennessee was too far back. Lets see how they look, though. (Many quite similar shots of Z, basically.)
Microphone stand >:(
Working the hair, there.
