Last night a student appeared at my issue desk at 6.02. Now, we close at 6 so I informed him of this quick smart, before he could engage. "But I just want to photocopy the past paper for [insert mathematical term here]." I again informed him we were closed and he could come back tomorrow. "But the exam's tomorrow," he informed me, looking despondent. And I actually said, in a very teachery voice: "Well then, you should really have come in before this, shouldn't you?" >:( (Disapproving librarian is disapproving.) He looked slightly more despondent and agreed with me but then asked again if he could please borrow them, he would only take a minute to copy them. I said no again, but then my stern shell crumbled and I couldn't keep it up any longer. There were still stragglers in the library after all, and I didn't need to rush off. I let him do his photocopying.
Where does niceness end and pushover territory start?
