So, Liss and I went to see Hancock and it was... not entirely what I was expecting. Spoilers ahead.

So yes, the trailers led me to believe that it was going to be a joyful superhero romp, and from a tiny clip I saw on the Empire site I knew of his waking up in hospital 80 years ago. And I also knew that Charlize was sooper because she was zipping around in a trailer I saw too (however even if I hadn't seen that it would have been entirely obvious because they kept dropping anvils on us about it throughout the first half of the film).

But it got weird. It was almost like 3 (good) films squished into one (average and confusing) one. Each part could have been interesting.

1. Screwed up superhero who tries to straighten himself out? Yes (I especially loved the bit with the bank where he kept saying "good job" to the police).
2. Immortal beings formed in pairs (I read a story about that recently - paired warriors, soul mates [m/m, f/f and m/f] who rose up against the gods and were split for their impudence but I can't remember what it was. Ah well) I can get behind. That would have made a good film on its own.
3. The family guy trying to make a difference. OK that might not have worked separately, but nevermind. It did seem tacked on.

The thing was, I never quite got into it because it never really seemed to get going. IDK, I can see what they were trying to do, but it just didn't really work.

The bit in the hospital with the shooting and the sprinklers and stuff? Yeah. I didn't really feel any sort of suspense and thought it was quite overdone. And not in a cheesy joyful overdone kind of way. Just a bit crap. And it wasn't like they were going to kill off two superheroes in a 12A.

And what was with the hook hand man? (I'm a mooonster!!!!) He seemed like he had more of a vendetta than was explained by the hand thing. And yes, I can see why he would be pissed off about that, but it looked like there should have been something more, like he was some kind of ye olde adversary. But again, absolutely no time to do anything with him. I did like it when Michael Bluth lopped off his other hand with an axe though. That made me lol quietly.

So yes, all in all quite disappointing. Anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Jason Bateman is still made of awesome, though. And we got trailers for Quantum of Solace, The Dark Knight and X-Files, so that was good.
