Fandom ramblings

So, I'll admit it, I'm a Doctor/Rose shipper. And a Doctor/Jack shipper. And a Doctor/Rose/Jack shipper. I read an embarassingly large amount of fic and the pr0n now amuses me, rather than disturbing me like it did at first. I even (shhh, don't tell anyone) read a couple of baby!fics that I liked. BUT (and it's a big but) I'm a fanon shipper, not a canon shipper. If Uncle Rusty'd decided to make the subtext text, I would've been quite put out, to say the least. (I also love Mickey/Jake. I'm a crack!fic fiend!)

Fanon Rose has been almost deified. She can do things that canon Rose would fuck up every time. I love fanon Rose, I love that she zooms about the universe saving shit and shagging the Doctor, but it's not real. Well, none of it's real, obviously, but you get what I mean. Some people seem to think that the Doctor will be mooning over Rose next series, but I think (hope) they're going to be disappointed. Yes, there will probably be a bit of emo!Doctor and some pointed not-mentioning of Rose because, yes, she was important, but he's just going to pick himself up and dust himself off and go and save the universe again. With Martha this time, who will hopefully not have the same emotional relationship with him, bacause although it worked once, it would be silly and annoying if he fell in love with his companion again. Yes, he always loves them, but not like that. And he doesn't mention them again. From everything I've read, Sarah-Jane was mad about the Doctor in her time and she got left in a worse way than Rose, and she wasn't mentioned again. Well, until School Reunion, and he's not really mentioned her since then. He was mad about (and possibly shagged) Reinette and she's not been mentioned again. That's the way it goes.

Rose changed throughout the two series she was in and she changed him - both of him - but she's still a 19 (20? 21?) year-old shop assistant from London and he's a 900+ year-old Time Lord with the weight of the universe on his shoulders. It's not tru luv 4eva and moreover it shouldn't be. Fanon romance, once again, is fine. It's what fanfic's for - doing all the things that the fans want but could never possibly happen for real in whichever show you happen to like. Spuffy, for example, would never have worked in the long term, but I loved it. Spawn was just squicky if you really thought about it, but again I used to read it and enjoy it.

So really, this is just my reaction to all the woe and angst in fandom. The episode was sad, Rose leaving was sad, but companions leave. That's what happens. It's not the end of the Doctor or the end of the joy that is this series. We coped with the Doctor changing recently and many times in the past. There have been tens of companions and they all leave and he carries on. A bit of angsty fic is all well and good but keep it in perspective.

This made more sense in my head on the way home, but then it always does. I'll finish off now - I think I've repeated myself quite enough times now!

Also,

OK, I forget some of them now, but there really were quite a few stealings from HDM in Doomsday. Void!stuff = Dust; 3D specs = amber spyglass; having to cut off the holes between the universes so they didn't collapse harks back to the specters; Rose and emo!Doctor stuck on either side of the wall, like Will and Lyra and their bench in the Botanical Gardens; and I'm sure something reminded me of the Daemons (can anyone else think what that might have been?) Do we think Uncle Rusty's a fan?
