In my youth, I frequented the zoo with my grandmother. We were members, and so often we would just go for our afternoon walks there, and look at animals. It was just more exciting than your average urban walk. Way more fun than greenlake.

Then, those days were over. my family discontinued our membership, and my grandma's senior pass can't get a guest in. So I rarely go there anymore.

Today I was running on my usual route that encirles the zoo grounds. Despite its proximity to highway 99, it's a pleasant trail, set up in the trees, away from the sun, and you can feel the vast open park space on the zoo side. There is the rich smell of manure and animals, which makes one feel as though they are in the middle of the country, far away from the city. But never do I see animals. Never.

But today I did. I saw elephants. It was great.
