Today it feels like fall. There is a scent of fall in the air, a slight chill when I walk outside to get the mail, and leaves are all over everything in my yard. I lit a pumpkin-scented candle, checked on the pumpkins turning orange in the garden, and bought a butternut squash that now sits proudly on my kitchen counter awaiting its transformation into soup. Today I am working on a trio of fall wreathes to hang on the porch, enjoying the quietness of the house and the onset of the fall season.
The cat has kept me entertained... I opened the back patio door to let him watch a squirrel and a scrub jay in action the back yard. He kept sprinting from the kitchen to our bedroom window to follow the action in the yard. He is a curious little creature... and a good companion.
Eliot and I are savoring these last few moments before he goes back to school and is swamped again. Today is a pajama day, although I am getting lots done via the internet. We bought our airplane tickets for our Disney land and sea cruise (a $1,918 value for $20 thanks to our frequent flier miles). I also have worked out a budget for us... we are trying to live as much as possible on the things that we own in the house and being happy with what we have rather than wanting more. I am making most of my Christmas presents this year rather than buying a bunch of stuff... it will be a lean Christmas, but not a bad one. I am looking forward to playing in the snow and being with family (including my kitty and new nephews!) for the holidays. My gift to my family will be mostly preparing food since I love doing it and I know of many of my family members do.
For now I am enjoying being at home and having the time to work on crafts and gifts. I will probably order our Christmas cards today (it is half price if you get them this early), plus work on a few craft projects besides the wreathes. I will hopefully post a pic here when I get them done.
I think Fall may be one of my favorite seasons. Yes, everything is "dying" in a way, but it sure does go out with a bang! I love Oregon fall because we get the leaves and the frost, but it is never followed by bitter cold like other places, just a mild winter with snow in the mountains. It is allowing me to plant a winter garden with parsnips, carrots, cabbage, leeks, cauliflower, and butter head lettuce. I can't wait to have veggies over the winter! I think my onions and scallions will be ready around December or January as well at this point.
I am also looking forward to a trip to the pumpkin patch to get our pumpkins and some apple cider...mmm....
I am going to tie up the corn stalks from the garden and put them on the front porch for some decoration. Who says you need to spend money to have fun?? :-)
My new favorite fall song, by James Taylor... September Grass:
"Well, the sun's not so hot in the sky today
And you know I can see summertime slipping on away
A few more geese are gone, a few more leaves turning red
But the grass is as soft as a feather in a featherbed
So I'll be king and you'll be queen
Our kingdoms gonna be this little patch of green
Won't you lie down here right now
In this September grass
Won't you lie down with me now
In this September grass
Oh, September grass is the sweetest kind
It goes down easy like apple wine
Hope you don't mind if I pour you some
Made that much sweeter by the winter to come
Do you see those ants dancing on a blade of grass?
Do you know what I know? That's you and me, baby
Were so small and the worlds so vast
We found each other down in the grass
Won't you lie down with me right here
September grass
Won't you lie down with me now
In this September grass"
I <3 fall.
