My Suprise

Okay, so you may or may not know that I don’t live with my husband. Here’s the story, be patient, it’s a bit long, and I do finally get around to the “surprise.”

Gabe & I met in our freshman year of college in the dorms. We started dating about 6 months after we met and have been together, more or less, ever since. For those of you who are counting, that’s almost 14 years.

Gabe was a Political Science major, wanted to go to law school, and become a Public Defender. Then, of course, he would change the world because he would be responsible for freeing ALL of those guilty people who are in prison. So, he goes to law school, graduates and decides being a PD is not as glorious as it once sounded and neither does practicing law. Then he decides to get his teaching credential and gets a job teaching high school social studies.

In college, Gabe coached a recreational youth soccer team to help out a friend. He enjoyed it so much that he continued coaching mostly youth teams in the local area throughout law school. He got a small (and I mean small) salary from the teams he coached, but he mainly did it as a hobby.

Some time after law school but before the teaching credential he decided to explore the possibility of coaching as a career. His ideal job, he thought, was to teach high school and also be the school’s soccer coach. So, he did that for a while. Loved the coaching, not so much the teaching. A coaching position opened up at a local community college. He applied and was hired. He stayed there for two years and loved going to work every day. Then a coaching position at a Division 2 state college was offered to him. He accepted. This school was about 2 hours from our house. We decided that he would try the commuting thing for a year and then we’d consider relocating after that. I just wanted to make sure this was a job he would stick with long term before I gave up my secure government job.

He had an extremely successful year at the state college, both personally and professionally. The faculty and players both liked and respected him. This was also the year that we got engaged so things were going along really well. He had made a decision that coaching was going to be his career and he was in a position (i.e. he had the training and experience) that it was financially feasible to do this. Granted, it didn’t pay as well as when he was practicing law (briefly), but he always had the biggest smile on his face when he was leaving for and coming home from work. I was so happy that he was in a career that he loved.

So we were on track to start our lives together. Planning a wedding, moving into and settling into our new house, and finally being able to relax financially. Gabe was then offered a chance of a lifetime - to become the assistant coach at a large Division 1 university. This was definitely the next step in his career path; we just didn’t think it would happen so fast. The only problem? The job is in Utah.
