A hospital visit or a shopping trip

Apr 08, 2017 11:11

The hospital visit with my mother yesterday did start quite badly. J and I were a couple of minutes late to meet her at the hospital when J's phone rang. We thought it would be Mum asking why we weren't there yet but it was Mum telling us she hadn't left home. F, my mum's carer, is just back from Uganda and hadn't changed her watch and my mum ( Read more... )

At these moments I usually pretend to be a random passerby

LOL! That sounds so familiar. I think hospital staff is quite used to elderly people saying weird things though. :D
I hope they can help your mum.

Sad about Tim Piggot-Smith.

I was hoping my mother hadn't unduly alarmed the other people waiting for an MRI! The doctor did look a little startled.

I suspect that as my mum is 88 they may decide that any procedure they could do is too risky. Her legs are better than they were but won't quite clear up, which is annoying, but she does still have some quality of life so on the whole it might be better to leave things alone.

Oh my goodness - your mother would make a good sitcom wouldn't she? Sorry - don't mean to laugh.

I was really sad about Tim Piggott-Smith as well. I worked with him a lot in the R4 Drama dept, and he was lovely - one of the few actors to actually remember your name and not just call you 'darling'. :(

I was very sad and so was J who saw him act at the Bristol Old Vic when J was at university and was very impressed by him. That was in pre-Jewel in the Crown days so J was quite pleased to have spotted him early.

There are times when my mother would make a good sitcom. She goes to a day centre once a week and the organiser described her as "a real character". I muttered darkly "that's one way of putting it".

Mum: Oh, is that the one that's just like being at the crematorium. They put you into a tunnel and the only thing missing is the organ music.
Doctor: We don't quite like to think of it like that.

At these moments I usually pretend to be a random passerby but as the doctor was talking to me too it wasn't particularly effective this time!

LOL. I'm watching The Golden Girls right now and that feels like something that I'd see on the show.

It does rather sound like it. I haven't seen that in years but I do remember they were very feisty.

I hadn't seen it in years, either until it got added to Hulu a couple of months ago. Yeah, most of them are pretty feisty.

Heh! Sometimes parents do say the most facepalmy things, and it's a life-long struggle. It just changes shape, from teenage years, to adulthood. *g*

Very true :) Part of the facepalmy nature of my mother's utterances is that she is a former teacher and has a very carrying voice so there's no possibility that people might not have heard what she has said.

Bless your mother. And all strength and hugs to you. :)

I was sad to hear about Tim Piggott-Smith, too. He was in one of my favourite Spooks episodes (in Season One; it also had Jools in it).

Off-topic: I'll be posting on Dreamwidth now, at usedtobeljs. Will friend you or whatever they call it. :)

Hugs!

I will respond in kind. I think I grant you access or something, which sounds vaguely smutty :) I think I also subscribe and I have no idea what the difference between that and access is.

Tim Piggott-Smith was very good at playing bad guys but was apparently a lovely man. Very sad.
