This was going to be an entry about how much I enjoyed my (brief) shoreleave on the planet, and the opportunity to get off the ship for a short time. -_tuvok_ and I went down together in the first group and ended up spending most of the time together. I don't know if it was just happenstance, or if Tuvok was following orders from chakotay. For some reason, my first officer was very concerned about the security down on the planet, as apparently this culture has had some civil unrest--though not in the past 6 months. It's not like Chakotay to worry so much, but I do appreciate his concern. And it *is* part of the first officer's job to look out for the captain's welfare. (I know there are some first officers who barely allow the captain to go on any away missions whatsoever due to safety concerns--and this is in the relative peace and tranquility of the Alpha Quadrant!).

At any rate, that was what I thought this entry was going to be about. But no sooner did I get back on board when there was a hail from paristorres. Apparently the proto-nebula they are studying has started expanding rapidly, and unpredictably. Much as I hate to do this, I've decided to dispense with shore leave for the remaining crew members (unfortunately Chakotay and harrykim are among those who just beamed down) and rendezvous with the shuttlecraft ahead of schedule. (We've already finished restocking, which was the original purpose for our visit here). I feel a little guilty over my decision (and the fact that Tom, B'Elanna, Seven and the Doctor did not even have the opportunity for any leave as they were already on their mission when we arrived at this planet) but it can't be helped. Class II shuttles weren't designed for the kind of turbulence and gravimetric shear they could be experiencing.

In the meantime, I'll see to it that the affected individuals receive other compensation, either in the form of increased holodeck time or replicator rations; it goes without saying that at our next shore leave opportunity they will be in the first group to disembark. Chakotay, at least, should be relieved, as he wasn't very happy with the idea of shore leave here in the first place.

Now we need to go retrieve our people.
