jane was like the only major women's magazine that wasn't all "be annorexic! if you're over 100 lbs you're a fat ass!!"

Or "here's how to please your man" or "semen has 5 calories per teaspoon"

Even though I currently have a subscription, I've been pretty disappointed with Jane for a while...it went from avoiding that dieting/semen stuff, towards it more and more.
Then they added a really cool feature in the back a couple of months ago that I really like, with guest writers telling personal stories, and it kinda redeemed itself for me. So between it all, I'm pretty indifferent about it shutting down...I'll always have BUST. I'm only pissed because I bought an entire subscription that isn't even done until the end of the year. D'oh!
Have you seen this article? http://www.bitchmagazine.org/archives/9_99jane/jane.shtml
I don't agree with it all, but it's thought provoking I suppose. I came across it today in all the Jane talk on the internets.

Yup. I stopped subscribing a few years ago.

I love that Bitch article. Speaking of postal costs being tough on magazines - small publications like Bitch are in trouble most of all. They moved from Oakland to Portland to save money and I hope it helps. I'd hate to see them have to go under.

I know all the smaller scale music mags are going under too. Travis mentioned it to me when I told him about Jane. Hrm.

Hm. That article sounds bitter. I guess if you're only looking for those things in JANE you'll find 'em - but I think the good things the magazine offers outweighs the negative.

Magazines to me are an indulgence. I love JANE because some spreads are just as commercial and "advertorial" as InStyle or whatever but then I can flip the page and read about music I actually listen to. Or articles on Roller Derby.

Are you still coming home?

nO!!!!!!! I love Jane!! It's one of the only magazines I like besides Bust and Nylon. That sucks. Jane is SO cheap too, a subscription is like $8. THIS SUCKS.

I never really got into Bust but maybe I'll start getting into it. I like Nylon too! I need to get subscription to that one. I really like Metropop too.

yay nylon! yay metropop! yay zink! kathleen and sarah, and jenny, if you are reading this-- you guys should read blueprint. i'm not sure how things are going for them (they had a period where they didn't publish for like 4 months, which i guess is kind of normal for a new small mag? i don't know.) anyway, you would like it. it's diy and design and fashion and food, but do-able. i love it ( ... )

I will definitely check out blueprint.

I'm not gonna lie - half the time I read gawker it seems like all this inside new york stuff that I am completely unaware of. They talk about socialites I've never heard of... and that's about it. So I gave up on it.

yeah, I read today that they aren't even going to send out the last issue, even though it's basically done. I blame Jane Pratt for leaving.

Gawker has recently gotten as into Jane as they used to be into Radar (only because Jane had the boob issue, which I think one of their interns participated in), which makes me sort of sad for them, except for the fact that I'm fairly certain no one at Gawker has an actual soul.

I will agree that it went downhill when Jane Pratt left. Hrm.
