My coursework is all in so I finally have the time/energy to catch up on Merlin. For better or for worse. Planning to try and watch one a day.
Honestly, this one was mediocre up until the last five minutes or so when it became ungodly stupid. All the characters were boiled down to one note, especially Arthur, Gaius was the exposition bunny as usual, the Disir were just the latest Old Religion Macguffin, and there was nothing visually interesting enough to hold my attention properly. Which is odd because this show is usually pretty to watch at least.
It was also really bitty. Like: first of all they're out hunting that one sorcery guy, then they're off to see the Disir, then oh noes Mordred is injured and they have to save him, then oh noes ethical dilemma time! Which I guess was the main thrust of the episode but it didn't come up until the end and also who the fuck is Sir Ranolph and why do we care that he's dead? Show, you cannot kill off a random knight who we have never even seen and then try to give it emotional resonance.
That said, before I go on to the truly stupid part: I liked the genuine concern for Merlin's emotional wellbeing that Arthur was showing. I liked Merlin and Mordred's conversation about grave markers. And I liked Merlin's description of the sacred place of the Disir, that was lovely.
So the ending. I'm sure everyone and their mum has already ranted about this, but - argh. Kudos to Colin Morgan, he was amazing in that one conversation with Arthur, but - Merlin, honey, that was quite possibly the stupidest thing you've ever done and I do not understand why Gaius did not smack you for it. The Disir repeatedly made it clear that not accepting magic would lead to Arthur's downfall. The Dragon said that there were futures in which Mordred did not kill Arthur. Mordred is visibly upset by Arthur's treatment of sorcerers. Put the pieces together you fuckwit. Maybe if Arthur changes his mind about the Old Religion, Mordred won't kill him even if he survives that injury and jfc it's not like you didn't have time to think this through you agonised over that call.
I mean seriously I am like super protective of Merlin, seeing people criticise him makes me sad, and I want to punch him right now. Somebody fucked up big time.
Final sort-of positive point: kudos to this episode for not victimising any women! Though by the looks of the trailer 5x06 has enough violence for both episodes. :D
