So I'm 32 years old and FINALLY registered to vote. Don't ask me why I finally did but I'm trying to grow up maybe??? So yeah, I registered as an Independent (because my birthday is Independence Day of course!). Ok not really but it sounded good right? I registered as an independent because I have NO IDEA what party I want to be in. The "religious

Both sides have their good points, but I voted for Obama and Biden early.
Things I like about Obama:
* He's calm and polite. We need a diplomat in the White House right now, instead of an agitator/warrior-- the war is starting to wind down, and to resolve it, you need level heads, not (imo) McCain, who seems very determined to 'win'.
* He's for more alternative energy-- not just responsible oil drilling, but things that can last longer, like solar and wind. As an environmental engineer, I can tell you that the main solution to the energy crisis is to diversify, and have many different sources of power. The Dems have been for more research and more alternative spending, not just oil. And doing it so as not to create more pollution and environmental problems. This one can't be solved overnight.
* The Dems have a better record for women's and minorities' rights, and Obama typifies that.
* His plan for the economy is more realistic, dealing with the 98% of Americans who make less than a quarter million dollars a year, not the 2% who make more.
Things I'm not crazy about McCain:
*I don't think Iraq is going to be a 'win', and, well, McCain was a Bush supporter throughout most of of this conflict-- and I think Bush has done a terrible job.
* He's not really a 'maverick' (which he seems to want to define as 'self-willed individual' and not 'person off on their own tangent'), but he talks himself up as if he is. He's a pretty straight-line Republican, really, and I dont' love their views on either the economy, or civil rights.
* One of his old classmates from West Point, and a fellow POW, has come out against McCain-- his take is that yeah, the guy's brave, and had guts in Vietnam, but that's not the same thing as being level-headed or having a good plan. He said that McCain is *not* someone he'd want near any big red nuclear buttons, because the guy's hair trigger temper might get the best of him. (here)
* I get the impression he chose Sarah Palin not for her experience-- there were many more qualified Republican candidates-- and not because she's a woman -- ditto -- but because she 'ticks the boxes' that the Republicans felt they had to appeal to. She's female, she's Evangelical Christian, she's a gun supporter, she's anti-abortion... I'm not thrilled at all about those last two things. But as VP, she wouldn't have that much input about the day-to-day running of the country. More problematically? They did not get Mrs. Palin prepared enough for the campaign trail. I don't know if they thought her being 'cute' was enough, but she didn't strike me as having enough grounding in the facts, never mind the job she's going to be doing. She's not someone who I think can be Pres., should John McCain, God forbid, become ill-- and he's 72. The odds are *likely* he'll have at least one health crisis in 4 years; they wont' release his medical records. So... yeah. This is not a good combination for me.
Hope any of this helps!
