Title: Someone New
Rating: G
Fandom: Doctor Who
Spoilers: New Who up to and including "Dinosaurs on a Space Ship"
Summery: The Doctor longs to have someone new with him. To experience the universe for the first time with awe.
Authors Note: So, I watch "Asylum of the Dalaks" and I watched "Dinosaurs on a Space Ship" and I decided that I'm really sick of Amy and Rory. They aren't bad people, they're not bad companions, I just think they've gotten old. They lack the wonder that a new companion has. The thrill of "where are we today" and "what sort of fun and mischief are we going to get into". The suspense just isn't there. I'm sure it's just me. Anyway, this little piece was written very late at night, proof read just once. Just putting my emotions onto the Doctor a bit.

Someone New

He doesn’t often look in on family, not that he really has family so to speak. Well, there’s the Ponds. He’s pretty much stuck with them, what with River and all. In a way they are his friends and in-laws, people he should love. And he does. But things have been off. It’s not as fun as it used to be. They are getting old, and tired. And he misses the fun.

But, he misses them too. The familiar. SO often he has people leave because they no longer want to be with him, or because they can’t. He thinks of Rose and Donna, or Martha and Sarah Jane. Of all the companions past and present. And he misses them all. And he wants someone to take with him to see the stars. Who will look out at wonder at where they are, who will be impressed, surprised, excited, about the travel. Not just act like another day at the office. Because, really, he needs the distraction.

So, he stops in to see Amy and Rory. Calls ahead, but then he’s late, he’s always late, even when it really matters. And they aren’t home. Not sure where they were at, but there’s someone else there. And it doesn’t take more than a minute for the Doctor to realize that it’s what he’s been waiting for. Someone who appreciates the wonder, someone who would be excited for the ride. And someone who would leave after a time and say “thank you, I’ve had a blast” and not be mad, and not be sad, but be happy to have had the time with him.

So, he’s off with another Pond, well, not a Pond, but close enough. An older Rory, someone who wonders of the TARDIS and orange sands and purple skies. Who thinks the idea of meeting Edgar Allen Poe or Rembrandt or Albert Einstein is the highlight of a life time; bit just a quick trip to be made in consequential by future trips.

They aren’t even go a week, with a hand full of postcards and a head full of memories Brian thanks the Doctor and asks for one last look at the Earth from above. And Brian talks. Talks about how Rory was as a boy and how as a kid Brian had always wanted to go to space. The dream of many a young boy in that time. And here he was, watching over the Earth.

And when they land he’s sad to go, but not because his life is ending, but because it’s been fun and it’s always sad to see fun end. And in the end, that’s what it’s been. Fun.
