Some people use canes when they get old. Others when they have an injury. But, other, just use them as a support. A physical support, to help someone walk if they've had an operation or surgery on a leg. Or as an emotional support, to show that the cane symbolizes something more than just a physical aliment.

Gregory House had a cane. Past tense. Had. He had a black cane, with flames on it. Along with some nicer ones, which he kept in his bedroom closet, so no one would have to see them but him. Well, it wasn't completely a "had", he still kept the canes in his bedroom closet, he still has them in his possession, but he doesn't use them. He stopped using it the night Lisa Cuddy had helped him detox from Vicodin. He had admitted his feelings to her that night, how he truly felt about her had been killing him and would have tortured him if he hadn't ever told her.

There had been something special about that night, seeing Cuddy wrapped up in a blanket of his on a chair opposite him while he lay on the couch. He had fallen in love with her twenty years ago, the first time he had laid his eyes on her. And when they had kissed at the block party a week later, he realized, without even knowing anything about her, that he was crazily in love with her. Then when they had slept together that night, how they seemed so compatible, as if they were meant to be together. But he didn't think on it. He dated other girls, well, slept with other girls mostly; he wasn't really a dating guy. But she was always at the back of his mind, constantly there, plaguing his thoughts.

That night, when she had helped him save himself from the person he was becoming, all those feelings had come rushing back, suddenly much more prominent than they had ever been before. When he was around her, he seemed to change, as if he was a totally different person. It had proven worthwhile to love her all those years, even though they spent most of the time arguing or making crude jokes at each other. That was their way of flirting with each other, letting the other know that, somewhere inside, they still cared about the feelings they kept hidden.

When he had fallen asleep that night, with Cuddy wrapped in his arms, the pain in his leg seemed to fade away. It didn't truly fade away, he knew it was still there, but it wasn't so important now. Now he didn't care if he was limping through the halls of the hospital, getting stares from people now that he didn't have his cane. His leg, no matter how much pain it caused him now, wasn't his main focus. He could still feel it, when walking or running every day, but he didn't care.

His focus in life wasn't his leg now, or even his walk; it was Lisa Cuddy, and their love for each other. Because when he was around her, the pain in his leg seemed to disappear, and finally, his life seemed completely perfect. Even if it wasn't. It was hard to have a perfect life when you were dating the Dean of Medicine.
