So I have this temp job at a hospital here in SF that is THE awesome! Yesterday I got to help film an open heart surgery in the OR. We set up a jib with an HD digital camera and dangled it right over the guys head and got video of his beating heart while the surgeons fixed his mitral valve which had become prolapsed. So what does that mean……basically a valve in his heart has got flappy and instead of blood moving in only one direction, blood is going in both directions because the valve seal isn’t taunt anymore and they were putting in a mechanical valve (a hard plastic ring they sewed into place to help the valve out).
We stood back with the anesthesiologist and the ultrasound tech. The ultrasound lady had a scope down his throat so they could get before and after shots o his heart to make sure they’d fixed the valve properly and so they could watch each chamber o the heart in case of problems. Before the surgeon came in, she was showing me what they were going to be doing and you could watch the oxygenated and nonoxygenated blood pumping all over the chamber in color even. I was checking out the blood pumping machine and the watching the anesthesiologist and all the cool toys he had. I chatted up the surgical nurse and checked out all the toys she had. SOOOOOOO stinkin cool!
The ultrasound tech asked us what we do when we’re not shooting surgeries…….we shoot rock n roll of course! What else? Sometimes I can’t believe this is MY life! Soooooo good!
