I sometimes look at recipe sites.
I cook a lot but I don't really follow recipes. I don't measure properly. I do everything by feel mainly. But I look at recipes for inspiration and sometimes cooking times etc.
I am baffled by the amount of recipes that say use this packet cake mix and then... add a can of soup... use this jar of sauce...
Those are instructions not recipes.
I always added to sauce jars and packet mixes because they never had enough flavour. Were never exactly what I want. When I had time I made my own stuff from scratch.
Going gluten free I had to stop using a lot of the bases I had used before because they insist on putting gluten in everything from cornflakes to iced tea.
So I adapted pretty much all our meals to be made from scratch.
I also have very little energy and a lot of pain due to the CFS and Fibro so meals tend to be fairly quick and easy things as a rule. I may do a roast or something fancy on a good day. But in general things are quick.
I can make fantastic stir frys in way less time than it takes to cook the rice. If I use wok ready noodles (Chang does GF ones and they are fantastic) it takes maybe 10 mins including cooking and it's really easy to remember. I'm terrible at putting stuff on and forgetting.
I make pasta sauces in the time it takes the pasta to cook.
I make my own oven chips and wedges. I crumb my own chicken and make my own sauce for parmigiana.
It's not difficult and takes very little time. I don't understand the reliance on TV and packet meals.
I've heard so many people (not on my flist) going on about how hard it is to cook Gluten Free. It really isn't. Not here. There are some changes you need to make but veg and meat are gluten free. Most everything else can easily be made.
It is more expensive than not having to bother but it's only really things like bread, ready meals like pies or crumbed chicken etc that cost more.
We buy local or organic veg, we buy free range meat and we have very little money at all. Packets and pre made stuff just costs so much more and it tastes bland. And I think if you're going to be paying money and in some cases killing animals for this food then it should be good and enjoyable and something special. Bland is just wrong.
