For all the efficiency of brief Facebook status updates, I have too much to say! A few nights ago, after watching Galaxy Quest for the first time, I actually dreamed about updating my Facebook status at length about the movie. Four people and counting (including cosmic-reverieand about Galaxy Quest-- only to stop when I realized the real meaning of the dream: I update Facebook too much. And Galaxy Quest is wonderful.

Yes, so! Ben's dad is staying with us for a couple weeks, in large part to help with the launch of some new electronic medical records system at the company Ben works for and he (Ben's dad) consults for. (More technically, works for... long distance... on his own schedule... doing consulting, from what I can tell.)

It's really great to have Ben's dad here for many reasons. He's a very jolly fellow, very prone to big laughter and cracking jokes. He and Ben are best buds, so Ben's mood & demeanor rises from "mild-mannered" to "jolly and romantic." Ben hasn't been around any guy friends since, oh, 2011. (My MOMS Club friends and I keep trying to convince our husbands to be friends (as it sounds like many of them have a lot in common), but none of them seem all that interested. What a shame.)
Ben's dad also buys us groceries and beer and helps cook delicious dinners! AND he almost always does the dishes, and has even helped with some laundry and helped organize stuff. Friends, I haven't seen my clothes dryer in about six months for all the stuff piled on it. Now it's all nice and shiny. And the shelves about the washer/dryer? Neat and organized, rather than a haphazard pile of random stuff that looks like it may collapse at any moment. Ahhhhhh. :)

He has also brought several bins of DVDs -- some for the grown-ups, some for the kiddos. Last night we watched Clerks (which left me feeling calmly satisfied like no movie has before). A few days ago we watched Beauty and the Beast, which I thought was fun (Avigail kept asking to watch other things -- she seemed to comprehend the movie about as much as the teacup), and I had actually never seen it before. (I was raised on Animaniacs, not Disney.)

And last Friday we watched Galaxy Quest. I was just about done putting Avigail in bed for the night, having left her tucked into bed with the light on and a promise to come back in a few minutes because I was a softie and let her keep playing with her little pink toy computer. That's when I saw that Ben (and his dad, who may or may not have already fallen asleep in an armchair) had selected that movie, loaded it, and paused it, waiting for me. How touching. :) Ben started the movie and within seconds I noticed Alan Rickman was in it.

Ooh. Alan Rickman?

Moments later I realized that Tim Allen was also in it. I like Tim Allen a lot, too.

Wait.

Alan Rickman and Tim Allen were cast together?!?!?!?!?!

That got my full attention. I immediately settled in for a riotously good time. I don't think I've laughed so hard at a movie in years!

After the movie, as I was starting to get ready for bed, I hear the voice of a cheerful little two year old. Ben had carried her downstairs.

"What is going on?" I asked with a laugh.

"She was in her room at the door saying, 'Mama? Mama? Mommy...' With the light on and everything."

Oops.

I realized this weekend, though, that our current bedtime routine involves her getting a minimum of sixty kisses, so that made me feel quite a bit less bad about forgetting to go back to turn out the light!
