Fangirl things

Why didn't anyone tell me that they've come out with a Guilty Pleasures prequel that shows the first time Anita and Jean-Claude meet? Granted, it's a comic and the artwork makes me gag every time I see it, but still... story!

There's also a new Ender's Shadow book coming out, although I have to wonder what else there is to say on that topic.

Not many of you read Baen's Universe and I have to admit, I let my subscription lapse on vol. 2 until Asaro's "The Ruby Dice" was announced, but the current issue is faaabulous. "The Necromancer in Love" by Wil McCarthy is the best zombie story ever, the winner of the Jim Baen Memorial Writing Contest is highly original and even Mike Resnick's article about bad science at the movies is hysterical. The best though is that thanks to prior issues of the magazine, I've been reading Elizabeth Bear short stories and adoring them. Her world-building is so good, the ends of "Cryptic Coloration" and "The Rest of Your Life in a Day" were abrupt jolts back to reality. Anyone want to recommend which of her books I should read first?

As I write this, I'm starting to wonder if world-building, not even story, is what really attracts me to books. LKH's two worlds, the Black Jewels setup, and even The Coelura and Anne McCaffrey's "Daughter" and "Dull Drums" are all favorites of mine bc of the systems that govern their worlds, rather than, say, the brilliant language or unpredictable stories. *cough*

Speaking of Anne McCaffrey, I finished Temeraire #3 and I want to know exactly how Naomi Novik got such a good deal for her soul, bc how DO you get Stephen King, Anne McCaffrey, and David Weber to all blurb your first novel AND get Peter Jackson to buy the rights to the movie. Seriously. Also, the NYPL should order #4 already. *coughs*

Speaking of fangirldom, why didn't anyone tell me Dave Grossman wrote for Baen? Then again, I have the first of his neo-Napoleonic naval books in a webscription and still can't manage to read it, despite my current obsession with all things Patrick O'Brien. ah well.

Anyone planning on reading the new Freehold book coming out in November?

I liked Tom Kratman's Posleen books, but haven't been able to get into his other series. Also, in the Posleen books, what's up with making me keep track of not only real life military stuff and fake stuff developed to fight the crocodile-headed centaurs, but freakin' Sluggy Freelance references?!?
