In which Kate shows up late for networking events

While going through my notes on Twitter, I discovered after I wrote the last post why I was writing up a not very good week, so this post will get moved to May 13 when I finish catching up on lj.

This whole "must bike if I want my ankle to work" every morning thing kinda sucks. Like, Tues morning, when I was late for my networking breakfast at the library and some fucker sat in my seat so I didn't actually get food. Boo. On the plus side, I missed the first half of John Paulson reading his resume to the bored crowd. Dude, Hank and Ace and Jamie don't care. The Q&A was pretty good though. He thinks gold is going to $2500-4000 in the next 3-5 years bc it tracks the money supply. Someone asked what else is a good inflation hedge and he started talking about how everyone in the crowd should buy a second house. He also likes stocks, bc earnings are growing, and particularly bank stocks over the next 12 months bc he thinks the current regulatory uncertainty will resolve. From your lips to G-d's ears dude.

Weds I got stuck at work so I didn't end up walking in to the event with Evil English. A woman she'd met at a corporate event apparently invited her to bring a date (other than her SO) to one of their periodic parties. It was kind of a weird room and when I snuck over to the wine, the most beautiful woman I've ever seen asked me, "Who are you?" Turns out she was our hostess - and glad I wasn't some random person. She and her husband run a small consulting firm and most of their guests are interested in third world development - hence how they met Evil English. I wish I knew why I couldn't seem to meet anyone there, although I'll likely keep in touch with the chick from Paul Weiss who used to coach the Chinese women's hockey team.

Thurs night was a rah-rah event at work where they lied and then they only had beer. As I was leaving the office, I got a string of texts from OperaBoss about how no one was coming to her b'day party on Fri and she's drowning her sorrows at a bar that happened to be 5 long blocks away. I walked in - and discovered she was there with a college friend. oops. So much for cheering her up. Ardesia is excellent though - the bartender set up a private tasting for me when I couldn't decide which wine to order and now I've forgotten which was great, except it wasn't the Gruner-Veltliner. However, we also got started talking about Marie's Crisis... and then we were in a cab on our way there.

We walked in - and the first person I saw looked an AWFUL lot like Bluebeard, aka Mr. He's Just Not That Into You. Which couldn't be right bc while he lives in the neighborhood now, he's too hip and besides he had a date... But I texted him and it was and of course I dropped my (thankfully empty) glass at his feet and argh. I liked the selection the pianist was playing that night, except that he'd only play a song from a show before moving on, which makes it harder :( OperaBoss' cousin came out and she introduced me to some guy with whom I spent the rest of the night arguing lyrics. Good stuff, although maybe next time I'll drink my bourbon on the rocks, bc with ginger ale, it goes down too fast.
