Six days. It took me six days to
give in and buy the eARC of Monster Hunter Vendetta. Your takeaway from this should be that the series is very entertaining, not that I'm a crackmonkey.
Monster Hunter International is a Marty Stu about a mild-mannered accountant whose life is changed when his evil boss is bitten by a werewolf and he has to kill him. Did I mention there's some wish fulfillment in there? Turns out the accountant was raised by their universe's equivalent of Commander Zero. There's also lots of gun pr0n, written by someone I'm told knows his stuff. If you've given up on John Ringo bc he writes about aliens or on LKH bc there's too much sex, or
you're cursing Jim Butcher, you should give it a try.
The main reason I hesitated on buying the second book is that I didn't like the resolution of the first book: the Big Bad is one of my least favorite classes of monster and the ending felt tacked on. The first chapter of the sneak preview of MHV made it sound like they were going to be a big part of the second book, but it wasn't as much as I feared and there's enough good stuff in there that I'll tolerate it.
I do feel the need to warn new readers that this is not great writing. There's a LOT of gun pr0n - think about how much time David Weber spends describing missile exchanges - and the story is a bit rough. Larry Correia is unlikely to win a Booker Prize, if ya know what I mean.
Wow, I could've put a lot of links to TV Tropes in this post.
Speaking of me not being a crackmonkey... according to my unresearched calculations, the new Miles Vorkosigan book should be available as an eARC within 2 weeks. I'm not ashamed to say I'll be buying that one, although I might hesitate if I'm still re-reading the last few books. I recently *coughs* re-read the first 40% of Komarr, which I've never particularly liked, and can't believe how much more there is that I didn't pick up on. Miles was awfully depressed about his dating life, wasn't he. Unfortunately, I get the impression that Cryoburn is more similar to Diplomatic Immunity, which I also didn't love, i.e. it's more Miles Vorkosigan, Consulting Detective Imperial Auditor, than MilSF. oh well, it's still a new Miles story.
Edit: Elsewhere, someone mentioned Herself has decided at what age Miles will pass on. Anyone heard that remark and know the number? I was shocked to realize he was only 30 in Komarr. I'm also not convinced the Cetagandans couldn't revive him if necessary, if only to shoot him again.
