Maybe Narcissus is a warning sign, like odd numbers in Star Trek

On the train back from Ct, my sister asked, "What are you reading?" I told her, "A vampire novel," bc I decided it's better she thinks I'm reading Twilight than she asks about Anita Blake.

Bullet is the second worst Anita Blake novel to date. The plot exists mainly to allow her to work in three group sex scenes. I like group sex as much as the next gal - have you seen my FetLife profile? - but this is just plain embarrassing. Someone said the reason Narcissus in Chains sucked so badly is she didn't have time to let her reader group vet it: I assume that's what happened with this one, particularly given her publication schedule this year. Early in the book, she describes Jason in such a way that makes it clear she doesn't remember the events of Blood Noir. Ok, that book was published two years ago, she's been busy, whatever. Then in the last third of the book, she contradicts something in the beginning of the book. Aren't editors paid to notice this sort of thing??

Speaking of editors... all that sex takes a lot of space. I bet the book could've been tighter - it's 350pgs - but even with all that space, the plot is resolved in a dry, just-the-facts epilogue.

There are good things in the book. The group sex is very hot, even if you're not into vampire porn. There's a fight scene that might be the series' Crowning Moment of Awesome. Anita works out with her bodyguards; considering I once talked about my fitness endeavors as the Anita Blake project, so yeah. I get the impression LKH has recently gotten into poly, bc she has good things to say about it.

"How can I love you and still want to do such terrible things to you and with you? How can it be okay with you that I like what I like?"

I knew in that moment that the only way he was hurting Noel was after hurting me first. With the decision my pulse and breathing slowed. I was at peace with my decision. I would take a beating before I let him hurt them again. Sometimes it's not about winning; sometimes it's just about doing the right thing even if it hurts.

People with nifty nicknames like negra gatita didn't puke from exhaustion and dehydration, or we tried not to.

Was I jealous? Maybe a little, but I watched [elided] walk toward us and the new tiger didn't protest it; I pushed the jealousy away. It wasn't who we were. There was enough love, enough sex, enough for everyone. When there's enough, you don't have to be jealous of anyone.

She's never written two horrible books in a row in a series, so I'll wait until after the next book before I give up on the series.
