One thing that I find astoundingly helpful for some strange reason is in the first-editing stage. I've done the writing workshop thing a couple of times over the years, and neither time was particularly helpful. In one the published-author leader's ego took over the whole proceeding and in the other a couple of the participants hogged all the attention and some of us never got to present anything.
