Bennett Spring(s) Revisited, Day Three

Oct 26, 2012 10:04

Heavy rain all night, though it had cleared off by the time we got up. We slept in a bit and since I’m a rank novice fisherman I had no idea what the fish would be doing after such a rain. So at Kate’s suggestion I checked the Trout Cam: there was one guy fishing where there are usually at least half a dozen.

I should add that we were very surprised to find we had WiFi in the cabin, sorta: 1 Mbps and a really weak signal. I was amazed that I was able to get the Trout Cam: for the most part it was barely enough to check our e-mail and that was intermittent - it frequently timed out - but we didn’t really need anything more. There is much better WiFi at the Lodge but it wasn't worth the bother.

I went out for a little bit of fishing in the morning but nothing was happening. Kate remained behind to sketch a fallen cut-up tree behind the cabin.

That afternoon, I fished and Kate sketched for a couple of hours. The unfortunate thing about her walker is that it’s not the best setup for sketching - without a table it’s difficult to balance everything on her lap. She finally asked me to take her back to the cabin so she could have a bit of a lie-down: she didn’t feel up to being out there until the final siren brought all the fishermen in at 1830, even if I did want to fish that long.

I did, and I’m glad I did. I caught one fine fellow in the late afternoon, but aside from a few nibbles, not much luck after that. I knew it was about time to pack it in, so I gathered in most of my line and as the siren blew I was climbing the bank, dragging my line behind me…

…and got a strike! Another VERY nice fish!

Kate made acorn squash and a tomato salad to go with it.

Fishing until 1830 means we ate late, at least for us - we usually have dinner around 1700. But it's a nice change - especially since, in spite of the heat of the day, it's been cool enough in the evenings to be able to sit quietly and enjoy a glass of wine in front of a nice fire. Even though the cabin has a TV with about a bazillion channels we don’t care to watch it - we much prefer to retire early and read, and while there’s a lamp on one side of the bed, it’s not enough for the person on the other side. Because of that, one of the things I’d decided to bring was a small folding table and a reading light. (On the left.)

And so ended our last full day at Bennett Spring(s).
