During Tuesday's class, the professor tried reciting the serenity prayer, (I forget why), and it made me suddenly very conscious of myself and where I've been.
I know the prayer verbatim. It has kept me sane.
I remember my heart racing for a moment as I heard him stumbling over the words, "God, grant me..."
Usually when someone starts it, a number of voices join in, we hold hands, our voices resonate, blend together.
No one joined in. It was just him, stumbling over the words.
I said them in my head. No one knew.
I think god tapped me on the shoulder that night.
Wake the fuck up, don't forget about where you've been and where you're going.
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
