This is in no way restricted to fandom, as you know. And nothing much has changed in online debate, except, perhaps, that the dubious techniques of online debate are more current in mainstream politics.

In the current internet censorship debate it appears a lot of the 'research' being cited is an inaccurate off the cuff estimate by somone several years ago, that then gets repeated by others, sometime even though they've been told it has no basis

I think the original "fanatics" who danced around ancient temples [citation? what citation?] were getting some sort of very real energy from that communion. Maybe there's science out there explaining why it's healthy. I sit in a temple video room watching a load of girls drive off in Bessie for the millionth time but I'm feeling the love. It's a kind of faith healing, absolutely.

But yes, these serials are also a text and even The Power of Kroll touches on very serious issues in the world outside fiction. Time and place for everything. I wouldn't stroll into a discussion on the impact Delta Magna had on the Swampies until I came down off the high from seeing toothy Tom nab a piece of The Key to Time.
