why should 50 books be "superhuman"? there are 52 weeks in a year, and most weeks i can read somewhere between two and five books. even if i take a couple of vacations from reading, that's still a lot of books. (my biggest problem with reading books is that they don't print 'em as fast as i read 'em, at least not books that i really want to read.)
i read the way people smoke. i take a book with me to appointments, to the bathroom, to the dinner table. i have a book in progress next to the computer, to read a page or two while i reboot, or while something loads if it's slow. i do read fast, but it's not skimming, it's just normal reading only faster. i have no idea how, because i learned to read at around two years of age; i more or less acquired all my verbal skills at the same time. (this is probably because my parents read to me all the time, reinforced by the TV commercials of sixty years ago, which consisted mainly of holding up the product and pointing to the name, saying it emphatically, then spelling it out while pointing to each letter in turn, then saying the name again several times. "Buy DUZ detergent! DUZ! D! U! Z! DUZ does all your laundry, so get DUZ! D-U-Z, DUZ!")
