Some thoughts on my
standing offer, which has turned out to be so beneficial to Comic Relief. :-)
Looking at those quotes, I can understand why entirely reasonable folks might become irked with RTD's directness about his ability and accomplishments. As a tired old scribbler, I personally dig it, but it's not everyone's cuppa.
That said: I wonder if the reason some fans are enraged by RTD's lack of false modesty is the eternal quest of the powerless elite for validation. They say he sucks; he says he rocks. All the evidence - ratings, audience appreciation figures, awards, blah blah blah - is on his side. What could be more ******* annoying than that?
If I'm right, and that's the motive for some fraction of fandom, then Freema may be in trouble for her own directness: "Be ready, willing, able and open to go on a new journey with me. I'm not taking over from Billie. I'm not trying to replace her. I'm going on new adventures and I can't wait to get started. Seriously, it's going to be incredible." (How much flak did Katee Sackhoff take for saying, "I play Starbuck. Deal with it." ?)
ETA: "We need to hold on to that new audience and not take them for granted. Let's face it, if ITV introduce a Saturday episode of Coronation Street, and that's not such a mad idea, then we're in trouble. So we've got to keep it strong and clean, emphasise the drama above the sci fi. Feel free to disagree, of course. Feel free to disagree and yet get these viewing figures, ha ha!"
