I immediately thought of your rant when I encountered a criticism of an article I wrote for Doctor Who Magazine, about the appeal the show has for women. I did this by jokingly saying that the show, which is about a male time traveller, is really about his female companions and the opportunity they have for adventure, and finding and demonstrating their strengths.
"[...] I thought this article was the worst thing in the magazine since The Fan Gene, and otherwise was one of the single most rotten articles in the history of anything. But then again, I'm arguing that the hypothesis and the conclusions were idiotically wrong, [...] I'm afraid it might be the bee in my bonnet about "minorities" who attempt to make claims for things that just aren't true. All I could read in that article was stuff about so-called empowerment for girls/women. This is the same sort of thinking that reckons the companions are the only characters who matter, and/or that the Doctor should be a woman."
