That "Don't". Jack has been running away from commitment to Ianto through the whole story. We find out why: he knows that, one way or another, something like this is going to happen. But what's more, he's in denial. Ianto knows he's had it; he's sad but calm. Jack can't accept it; he panics. He tells Ianto to "save his breath" partly because he can't bear to go through the tragic goodbye, and partly because he's desperate to believe Ianto's going to stay with him and not leave him. OH CAPTAIN, WE KNOW HOW YOU FEEL.
I looked at a cap of happy!Ianto thinking about avant garde sex and did some more crying. Gods, I'm pathetic. HE'S SO HAPPY. T_T
Ianto brought an extra shirt for Jack in case he got shot. <3
tencrush reckons S4 will be Jackless and Gwencentric. After foolishly mocking her last prediction, I dare not contradict her, although hell, I'd watch that, especially if PC Andy is in it and is gay and then Jack comes back and they have a difficult and complicated romance. That said, looking at Barrowsplat interviews, he seems keen for more Jack. (RTD seems more ambivalent. He's ready to go with more show, though.)
36 had a very clever suggestion: future episodes could be set in the various historical periods through which Jack has lived. As the only non-awful way to have more Ianto on TV is via the extensive pornographic flashback, I reckon S4 could do a Highlander / Forever Knight and build a story around flashbacks - perhaps a recurring phenomenon or foe that Jack has encountered at different times.
Obviously the coda is set six months into the future to eliminate any suspicions that Jack is carrying Ianto's child. Although if someone hasn't already ficced this I will I'll be a monkey's uncle.
I sh'a'nt link to it because it ate my browser's fayce, but the Yahoo! News review made this interesting comment: "The matter-of-fact depiction of a same-sex relationship also sets Torchwood apart from much mainstream science fiction." Folks who reckon the show isn't homophobic are focussed on the first part of that sentence, and folks who reckon it is are focussed on the second part. (Terrific, sane analysis of the question here.) Given its televisual context, perhaps COE is simply ahead of its time. (Barrowman also remarks on "the normality of their relationship".)
(What RTD says about Mary Sue is brilliant and true. The concept has no meaning outside fandom, where it has much more to do with social control than craft.)
GDL interviews: before and after. "What dreams do you have for Ianto to do in Torchwood in the future?" "Well, you know I think he should... um..."
Awesome Eve Myles interview
