Notes: [
Masterlist] | Title from The All-American Rejects
Disclaimer: If this were real, would I even be here?
William generally liked school, but not private schools and definitely not private schools in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which definitely wasn't Illinois, home. Technically, though, Barrington wasn't home anymore. William moved in with his second cousin, twice-removed - or something to that effect - at the end of June. Technically, Cambridge is home now.
Adam, William's cousin thing, seems pretty cool. He's older, a senior, and has a job, which is why William's hardly spent any time with him in the last two months. That and the fact that William's hardly left his room, even when Adam's out of the house.
His mother calls from Arizona every Thursday, but William is sure to be out, taking a walk or getting coffee - his one true vice - every time she rings.
Mr. Wentz instructs the class to copy down the notes on the board and William raises his hand as everyone else bends their heads to the paper. Wentz simply nods at him to speak.
"Do we need to write the notes verbatim?" he asks just loud enough for Wentz to hear.
The Latino boy that had bumped into him this morning sniggered a few feet to his left and whispered, "Could you suck up any more?"
He was obviously mocking William and, to be quite honest, William was already pissed off because he was here and not in Barrington.
"Nah, but I can suck you a lot more, if you'd like," he hissed. The boy's jaw dropped and William glared for a moment before gathering his things and rushing out of the room. William felt stupid. He wasn't sure if what he'd said made any sense. It was a bad retaliation, if anything. He had a feeling that the Latino boy was homophobic - or actually gay, just not openly. So, either way, a remark like William’s would piss him off.
William rushed through the mostly empty halls with his head ducked to hide his flaming red cheeks. When William reached the courtyard, he was surprised to see a lot of people there. William had free period next hour, so he assumed everyone had, at least, one free period a day. He spotted Adam across the yard with, at least, four other people paying rapt attention to him and he knew it. William slouched over to the wall and sat in the grass with his back to it.
William glanced around and recognized a few juniors from his Calc class. William's only a sophomore, but he's smart, so he's in a few advanced classes. He figures this is the Junior break hour, or something, and Adam is just skipping. He could be wrong though and he knows that.
He tore his eyes from the students around him and pulled an empty notebook from his pack. He easily began to scribble words down. He didn't call them anything in particular; - poems, lyrics, stories - they were just his writings.
The bell rang and William knew his classmates would be filling the quad on their way to their next classes any minute.
Of course, the tall Latino was the first in the quad. He glanced at William before strolling over to Adam. William gaped openly, but once he realized he was, he shut his mouth and glared at the obvious friends.
Then Adam slipped his arm around Gabe's waist and pressed a sweet kiss against Gabe's temple.
William was gaping again.
