Running From Lions {TABLE 19}

Summary: The reason Zack now always has his shirt off; This is sort of an AU b/c I changed Zack's chest tattoo { table.}
Disclaimer: Only owned in Katyland; Zack threw the key in the ocean.

That stupid tattoo glistened in the sunlight & water as Zack trudged out of the ocean. Zack is almost never shirtless, especially around Alex, because he has that stupid tattoo.

Alex doesn't remember. He doesn't fucking remember. He doesn't remember that night. The night that was possibly the best and worst of Zack's life. They night of their first kiss. The night of their last kiss. The night Zack got the stupid tattoo to show Alex how much he loved him. The night Alex was so drunk. He doesn't fucking remember.

Zack had thought Alex wasn't that drunk. He thought Alex knew. He'd thought Alex knew what he was doing and who he was doing it to. He thought Alex loved him back. He'd thought Alex had realized and decided to do something about it. He thought Alex loved him back.

Now, they're in Hawaii, fucking Hawaii! Zack can't not swim. It's Hawaii. He's only agreed to now, though, because Alex is still asleep and he knows he can have his shirt back on before Alex joins them at the private beach. Rian knew about the tattoo first. He'd walked in on Zack changing his shirt one day and immidiately, as Zack's 'best friend in this entire world', demanded an explanation. Rian had, at some point unknown to Zack, told Jack about the tattoo but not the reason behind it. Jack couldn't keep a secret. Everybody knew that. Yet, he hasn't told Alex about the tattoo.

Rian waves a hand to Zack, motioning him over. He obliges and, when he reaches the drummer, Rian tells him Alex is on his way down. Zack grabs his shirt & pulls it on way to quickly to be in any way normal. Rian sort of chuckles but doesn't because, well, Zack's standing right there.

Alex appears at the edge of the sand, "Hey!" Rian calls back a greeting & Zack waves, smiling unconciously at the mere sight of Alex.

"Dude, you're leaking," Alex laughed, gesturing towards Zack's shirt. He hadn't dried off completely and his shirt was sticking to him in the few places where water remained. Zack forced out a laugh as he settled beside Rian

"Alright, I'm goin' in," Rian mumbled, flipping off his shoes & jogging towards the water.

"Me too," Alex grinned. He pulled off his shirt. Zack watched. "You coming?" Alex asked.

"Na, I just got out." Zack settled on the towel Rian had just vacated.

"Aw, come on! Please," Alex pouted. Zack hated that pout, just like he hated the tattoo.

"No, man, I'm tired. Go, have fun," Zack fake smiled before rolling over on his stomach & closing his eyes.

"Fine," Alex grumbled. "Jack!" he called lazily as he headed for the water. Zack felt bad but shoved the feelings away. He shut his eyes & focused on Alex's laughs and squeals floating up over the water.

"Cannon Ball!" Jack bellowed just before a loud splash. Zack dozed off slowly, smiling in content.

Not twenty minutes later Alex was bolting from the water & towards Zack shouting, "Zachary, get the fuck up! I'm bored!" He didn't stop when he reached Zack either. Oh, no. He skidded right on to sit on Zack's back, dripping shorts and all.

"Fuck, Alex!" Zack groaned as he rolled over. When he stopped he found Alex was pracically straddling him. Oh, hell. "What do ya want?" Zack grumbled.

"Please come swimming."

"No."

"Please?" Alex wriggled a bit and that did nothing good, as he was sitting on Zack.

"Alex, I don't fucking want to," Zack snapped standing abrubtly, causing Alex to fall off him, and stomping back towards the hotel. He'd gotten a rather inconspicuous boner just then and hadn't really meant to be such an ass hat but he had to get out of there. He scurried back to the hotel & headed straight for the bathroom.

The only way to take care of Alex's stupid affect on Zack was a cold, cold shower. He flicked the water on before shedding his already wet clothes & jumping in. Twenty minutes later, Zack was safe to exit the shower. He changed & walked into the room he was sharing with Rian. Jack and Alex, of course, are sharing the other room.

Rian was hesitant, "You okay?"

Zack groaned in annoyance at Alex,"Fuck." He grabbed a t-shirt & slid it over his head. "Yea, I'm fine," he huffed. Rian bit back a chuckle; he really didn't know why he found this . . . thing between Alex & Zack so amusing but he did.

"You could just-"

"I'm not telling him."

"Telling Kara I loved her was the best-"

"It's not the same."

"It could-"

"It won't be better. You & Kara are fucking perfect; Alex & I are fucking nothing," Zack spoke firmly, ending the convesation they already had repeatedly.

"We, uh, have an acoustic. Tonight," Rian sort of winced as he spoke because he knew what was coming. Zack kicked the night stand, balled up his fists, let out a few shouts of anger, and shoved the dresser. He fell onto the bed, covering his face with his hands.

"Why can't life just be easy?!" he shouted. Rian knew comforting Zack now was next to immpossible.

"You only have to play four songs-"

Zack deadpanned, "Which four?"

"I, uh- I don't know; probably We Say Summer, Jasey, Sunday, and-"

"No," Zack groaned, knowing it was coming.

Rian sighed, "Next best." Zack let out another shout of frustration. Alex had written The Next Best Thing about a week after his & Zack's. . . encounter. Alex had wanted the 'girl' from the night before to call him, 'or something.' Little did Alex know, the girl wasn't a girl, but was Zack. Zack, of course, wouldn't tell him & had to listen for two weeks while Alex complained and, now, has to suffer through playing the stupid song. Playing it acoustic, nonetheless; where it's just him & Alex up there. Alone.

Matt knocks twice on the door, "Come on, guys!"

"We're going for lunch!" Jack squeals. Rian chuckled & gripped Zack's hand, pulling him off the bed.

"Shake it off," he mumbled. It was, sort of, a tradition by now; Rian telling Zack that under his breath.

Zack mumbles an impatient reply, "Yea, yea."

They walked outside, straight to the van. Alex was there; he's always there. Rian set a comforting hand on Zack's shoulder momentarily before walking ahead to talk to Evan. Zack climbed in last, stupidly. Rian, Evan, and Jack were squished in the back seats, Matt was driving with Danny in the passenger seat. That put Alex & Zack in the middle bench. Great. Alex seemed to be mouthing to himself; Zack assumed he was making up a song or something. Then, words became barely audible & they sounded ridiculously familiar to Zack.

"If you wanna call it a heartache; why don't you take back those things?"

Zack gave in & asked quietly, "What are you singing?"

"Oh, uh- Blink. Time to Break Up," Alex flustered.

"Oh," Great; almost as great as The Next Best Thing, even better actually. God, this life fucking sucks. Zack scooted across the bench, as far away from Alex as he could get in the van.

Rian called from the back, "Where are we going?"'

Jack stuck his head up between Alex & Zack, "Hey."

Matt replied, "Kiss fm."

"You guys seem off," Jack noted. Alex turned to look at Jack, then curiously at Zack.

"What?" he snapped.

"You have been off," Alex said calmly.

"Have not," Zack huffed.

"Yea-huh," Jack argued. Zack glared.

Alex face filled a bit with realization, "Yea, ever since- Oh, I dunno. It's been a while, man."

"Mhm," Jack added. Zack resumed his glaring.

"You okay?" Alex asked softly.

"I'm fine," Zack hissed.

Alex & Jack opened their mouths to say something else but Rian interuppted, "We're here! Come on, Alex. Let's go check out the bathrooms!" Rian vaulted over the seats, somehow managing not injure anyone, and grabbed Alex's wrist, yanking him out of the van & toward the building. Fucking ninja kid. Zack made a mental note to thank the stupid ninja kid later.

"Come on, Jack," Zack mumbled, climbing out of the van after Matt & Evan.

"How come everyone's here?" Jack asked loudly. Matt shrugged as if to say 'why not?' and Zack ignored them all. He walked in and took a seat on the nearst couch until he was needed.

"Zack, c'mere," Matt called, gesturing with the wires. Zack obliged silently & stayed silent all the way up to getting in front of the camera. No one tried to talk to him, not really.

"You ready?" Alex asked, all buisness.

Zack answered too quickly, "Yea, of course," and earned a curious glance from Alex. Zack looked up & saw Rian watching from beside Matt. Rian's face was filled with sympathetic concern.

"Shake it off," he mouthed. Zack didn't both responed, just took his seat & bent over to put all attention on his guitar for the next half hour. Alex sang. They got through Jasey, Sunday, and Summer with ease. Alex was explaining the meaning behind each song before singing them. As soon as Summer finished Zack left the stage as quickly & incopicously as he could, leaving Alex to think he was just going for a drink or to the bathroom. He went straight to Rian.

"I know, I know; shake it off, but, Rian, I can not play that song one more time."

Rian sighs exasperatedly, "Zack," he pauses. "I don't even know what to tell you anymore. Fuck, I don't know. Just tell him?"

Zack's ignores Rian because Alex is looking over expectantly; it's a commercial break. Zack pushes past Matt & Rian as Alex moves towards them, mumbling something like 'going to be- bathroom.' It was a lie, Rian knew, but it would get Zack out of having to play Next Best, and that's sort of what Zack needed right now.

"Jack, go play Next Best with Lex," Rian orders before Matt can even register that Zack is 'sick'.

"I- Uh, okay." Alex frowns in the direction Zack went but follows Jack back on set anyway. Rian tries not to listen to the song; he, kind of, feels like he shouldn't. The song finished quickly & Alex had already done the question section, so he & Jack left the stage. Alex didn't say a word, he just headed for the men's bathroom.

"Zack?" he called immediately upon opening the door. The call wasn't necessary, Zack was pulled up on the counter, sitting silently. "You alright?" Alex asked casually.

"Fuck, Alex, no! You know I'm not fucking alright and you need to stop mother fucking ignoring it!" Zack snapped, jumping off the counter & stomping out of the bathroom, out of the building. He starts to run; Zack used to be a runner, why not start again? He doesn't run away. He isn't that stupid. He runs back to the hotel, and only gets lost once. It doesn't rain on him, and he isn't picked up by some creepy guy in a van. Alex doesn't come searching for him, and he doesn't even have his phone to ignore the calls he might be getting. He just runs back to the hotel. He doesn't even go in; they could find him inside. He goes back to that stupid private beach, not expecting everyone to be there. But they're there. Rian, Jack, Matt, Evan, and even Nano, who Zack didn't know was even here and must have flown in. He doesn't walk up to them. They're not searching for him. They're sitting on the beach, sort of in a line but not really, and just looking out. Damn, how long was Zack gone? They looked as if they'd lost all hope. Zack hardly felt bad; it was all Alex's fault, after all. Alex, who looked the most depressed & hopeless of the group of guys; face in his hands, shoulders slumped & entire body just radiating depression. Fuck it, Zack went back to the hotel. He went upstairs & he climbed in his bed, but not before a quick shower & short text to Rian.

Alex, who'd had no fucking idea what the shit Zack had been yelling about in the bathroom, had forced Rian & Jack to tell him 'what the actual fuck Zack was on about'. Zack heard Rian come in hours later. He doesn't even know if Rian told everyone else he was okay.

-!-
"I'm just gonna- You know, like . . yea," Alex doesn't know how to tell Zack he needs to play him a song.

"Fuck, Alex, what are you even trying to say?" Zack is impatient. It's been two days since he bailed on acoustic performance. He hasn't left his room and the only person in it was Rian. Alex walks across & sits on Rian's bed before deciding against it & just standing awkwardly.

"You have to come to the show tonight; you don't even have to play. You just- you have to come see it."

Zack eyes Alex carefully, but gives in, "Fine, I'll be there," he grumbles, heading for the bathroom. Zack showers & dresses & lets Rian drive him to the venue. He sort of hids in the merch stand with Vinny until Alex announces he has a new song, and then Zack knows that's why Alex wanted him there. Zack, being the scrawny boy he is, spends the first half of the song just trying to get backstage to listen better. Alex's eyes stay on Zack the whole time and when Zack finally reaches side stage, he actually starts to listen.

Running from lions, never felt like such a mistake.
Running from lions, never felt like such a-
Don't forget, we've got unfinished business;
Stories yet to unfold,
Tales that must be retold,
And I regret not knowing when to put an end to all this madness.
It keeps me wanting, keeps me wanting

Lions, lions, lions, lions- Fuck, it finally hit Zack! The fucking stupid tattoo. It was a lion! A lion that Alex ignored, or rather Zack hid from him. Zack understood the song and now he just wanted to maul Alex but Alex was still onstage & he would have to wait. Alex played their last song, Remembering Sunday. Zack bounced, and bounced, and bounced on his heels. Half way through the song he decided to pull of his shirt, telling himself it was because of the Hawaii heat & not the fact that now Alex knew. Finally, finally, the set was finished & as the crowd chanted for encores, Zack prayed 'not tonight'. Alex must of heard Zack's prayer, not that either is even the slightest bit religious, and told the crowd, "Not tonight, guys."

Zack really did love him. Finally, for real this time, Alex exited the stage & walked straight into Zack's skinny, skinny frame.

"You should of fucking told me," Alex's word were scolding but his voice was loving. Zack shrugged & brought his hand to the back of Alex's neck, pulling their lips together. Finally.
