The Day the Crayons Quit & The Day the Crayons Came Back
by Drew Daywalt, Oliver Jeffers
I have wanted to read the first book ever since the children's librarians book talked about it during the volunteer luncheon we had a couple years ago. I actually ran into the sequel at the library first and read that, then saw the first one on a table on its way to another branch as I was walking out of the library, so I stopped and read it as well. So I read them both the same morning, just out of order. Oops! Still, they were both such fun that I don't even mind.
Imagine what your crayons would say if they could talk to you. Now imagine that they all wrote letters expressing these desires--wanting to travel the world, wanting to be sharpened, wanting to be used to draw more interesting things, wanting to be used less so that they don't get all used up, wanting to let you know they've been lost in the sofa for months, etc. The storytelling, done through letters and amazingly adorable illustrations, is fun and playful and makes them sympathetic little characters. I was so happy to see them get a happy ending!
The storytelling style of letters and postcards is appealing and fun. There's even a glow-in-the-dark page. What fun and imaginative books. They definitely made me want to go color :-)
