Alexander, the Old Town Mouse
by Cheryl Shaw Barnes & Peter W. Barnes

A signed copy of their House Mouse, Senate Mouse passed through my hands before the 2011 BookCrossing convention. But I ran into a this book at the library a few weeks ago and decided to hang about in the children's section and read it. It's about a mouse named Alexander, who wants to attend a costume party and needs help from his friends in order to complete it. He goes around town, picking up pieces and hearing comments. Then he heads to the party, and of course everyone loves his costume.

What was neat was that there were a few buildings illustrated that I recognized. At the end of the book, there is a list of each location--places like Robert E. Lee's house and Gadsby's Tavern. My favorite was one I didn't recognize--the basement of the Ramsey House--even though I went there during a candlelit tour of Alexandria and had a helping hot apple cider in the basement. Once I knew that's where it was, I went back and looked at the illustrations. It was absolutely the same place! This was a cute children's book, made special because it depicts a nearby town I love to visit.
