A Mama for Owen
by Marion Dane Bauer
The illustrations on the cover attracted me to this book when it came in through the bookdrop at the library last week. The soft, sweet illustrations of the baby hippopotamus immediately endeared me to it.
The story is a mix of sad and happy. Owen the baby hippo plays with his mother and snuggles with her. But then all the hippos are washed away and a wave brings Owen back, because he's lighter than the rest of them. Poor Owen loses his whole family including his mother. But then he finds a tortoise and latches onto him, treating him as he would his mother. The tortoise is patient and kind with the baby hippo. They play hide and seek. And the hippo snuggles with him.
It's a beautiful story, especially because it's true! The officials at the reserve were amazed and amused by their bond :-) What a hartwarming picture book!
