Eureka: Road Less Traveled
by Cris Ramsay
This tie-in novel was a hoot. I thought it fit in perfectly with the mid-series Eureka-verse (pre-reboot but post Stark's accident). Characters I love like Carter and Fargo shine. And almost everyone is given enough facetime in the book to seem entirely in character. I especially loved some of Jo's and Allison's reactions.
The story starts out with something important being stolen from Global Dynamics and an accident taking place regarding it, causing something like a massive energy surge. There's another experiment in the works involving parallel worlds. And, suddenly, the Eureka we know and love are thrown together with a slightly different Eureka. In that one, Carter never came to Eureka, so the town is slightly different based on the number of times and things that Carter has saved.
It's fun to see characters in slightly different roles--Fargo is the Sheriff (poor Jo still the deputy), Henry's in jail, Kevin's dead, Vincent's cafe doesn't exist, etc. It reminds me of the post 1947 reboot shakeup in a way. But in a better way, you actually have two versions of most characters and the entire town has to deal with the two Eurekas colliding (literally: cars driving from one reality into another is dangerous!)
There are lots of little subplots and threads that weave their ways into the plot quite beautifully. It's not just about some mysterious something being stolen or a great new gadget--it's the emotional and ethical reaction to these. It's also a great example of why the town needs a guy like Carter around!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and thought it was a perfect way to make the fandom live a little longer in my mind. I was so sorry to see the show end.
