Yesterday I arrived at internship at 8AM like usual...and around 9:30 my supervisor asked me if I would be willing to stay a little late to do a supervised visit. I guess the S.court overturned a judges decision on a recent case, which hardly ever happens and the case is going to court again in a month and DHS has no idea if the judge is going to suddenly decide to return the children to their mother. So they need to start visits right away just in case the judge does return the children so they are at least familiar with the house. Now...my part. The visits NEED to be supervised and the only person available to do them....is...me. So I leave an hour early to the town I need to go to which is an hour away. I have never been to this town and get very lost. It is crucial that I am at the house before the child is dropped off because he can not be alone with his parents.
After driving around the town for 35 minutes I find the apartment and park. I wait about 10 minutes before I go in because I know only the father is home and after reading parts of his file I don't want to be alone for him with long. Once I got inside it wasn't too bad, the father wasn't scary and we made small talk. SO the child arrives and they have their hour visit. THere is a ride schedualed to pick up the child...so we bundle him up and go outside. No ride is there.
We wait about 15 minutes. No ride is there.
I am getting a little panicy because their phone is not working and my cell has no towers so I can call no one to check on the ride. The mom said she knows where the foster family lives so I decide we will put the car seat in my car and I will take her with me to show me where to drop him off. It is VERY COLD outside and we are all out there putting the car seat in.
Normally a child wouldn't be brought out in the cold temps but I had to unlock the car and the child needed to be in my site. It was a bad situation all in all.
SO i ended up working from 8AM-8Pm and it was just awful. I have to supervise these visits 3 more times. Hopefully they go a little better next time.
