Dear customer,
Yes, I am aware that ladies wear is upstairs - I work in the damn shop. I also realise that it is somewhat inconvenient that there are stairs and no lift. I don't appreciate it when you exclaim loudly to your friends "Oh, it's upstairs. No way I'm going up there". No matter how loudly you say it, the stairs will still be there I'm afraid. It is a small, listed building, so I'm installing a lift for your personal use is not an option. Even if a lift could be installed, complaining to me will not change a damn thing. I am merely the saturday girl - I have about as much influence as the postman.
If you are elderly/disabled/have a pushchair I will do everything in my power to help you. I will (and do) run up and down the stairs bringing you items of clothing to look at and try on. I sincerely do not mind doing this, because mostly the people who are unable to get up the stairs are polite about it.
However, if you are merely overweight and lazy, or complain rudely, I will not make any effort to help you. If the 95 year old lady who walks with two sticks can get up the stairs, I'm sure you can too. Maybe if you made the effort to climb a few more stairs then you wouldn't be in such bad shape.
Yours,
