the reverend

saw the reverend horton heat at the empire last tuesday. it was my first on both accounts, seeing him perform and being at the empire. i enjoyed the show...showed up late so i missed the first band (super suckers), but saw nashville pussy. eh. they were okay. not something i would probably see again unless they were opening for an act i really wanted to see. the empire was an acceptable venue. the bar area was roped off and packed with people. no way you were getting a drink unless you wanted to fight through the crown wait thirty minutes and then have to stand in the crowded space and drink it before going back onto the floor. so i did without, probably best since i was driving. the reverend played a good selection of songs, lyrical and instrumental. danced around a bit, but got pushed out of my spot by two obese drunk sweaty meat-heads. moved to the back for more breathing room and could still see just fine. so it wasn't to bad. i left a bit early before the show was over...feeling old and tired since it was past my bedtime. all in all a good time. an interesting coincidence, d and mel where there along with d's brother david and his girlfriend. it was bound to happen when we live in the same area and like the same things, but it was just the tiniest bit wrenching since it had been almost two years since i had seen them. d did come over and chat for a minute while the rev was setting up. it was strange, he was very friendly and charming...but i didn't feel overwhelmingly one way or another about the experience which made me feel good. just a little bemused with the whole thing. he invited me to hangout with them since i was solo, but i declined. it was nice to respond to the question "how are you doing?" with "im doing excellent, just got back from two weeks in madagascar," and other positive things...and i looked damn good. ;)
