TV '09: The Hit & Miss Fall Season (and a rant)

I'll be honest - this year my usual "I'll watch every new pilot" attitude went straight out the window, between being out of the country and moving into a new place. We finally got the cable hooked up (glorious HD! How I love thee!) and though I'm still behind on a few shows I feel compelled to toss my few cents, divided into 3 categories, out into ( Read more... )

I also love love Community! I watched it just to see what it was all about and I had no idea that it was created and written by Dan Harmon, one of the co-founders of Channel 101 and recent Emmy winner for writing Hugh Jackman's opening number for the Oscars. So, yeah, if you look at the web exclusive stuff on hulu for community, not only is it hilarious, but it's also a bunch of people from Channel 101.

I also dislike Glee! I've watched five episodes and I'll probably continue to watch because Chelsea watches religiously. But I don't like it! And, yes, one of the reasons is I'm not sure which character I'm supposed to like. In fact, I would say there are NO likable females on the show whatsoever. MAYBE the ocd teacher, but she's not exactly a role model. It's funny because that's not a problem for me with, say, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" or the movie "Election," but I think it's because those shows know what they are. I don't think Glee has figured itself out yet and it doesn't look like it's going to. PS-it has made me laugh exactly once, and that was when Josh Grobin was hitting on the "blousy alcoholic."

Thanks for the info re: hulu - I don't usually seek out extras from tv shows like that, but for Community I'm all about it!

And I agree completely about Glee not knowing what it is yet - it's an ensemble with very few people to root for. I like shows whose characters have unlikable aspects (House, etc), but I don't think they should all, to some point, be unlikable. Considering how obsessed networks are with making characters 100% amazing I'm surprised Fox let that slip through.
