Ugh! I'm sorry to hear about your car woes. I'm hoping and praying that any car problems I may have will wait to reveal themselves much, much later. I have a service engine light shining brightly that may be due to some gasket (not the head gasket) leak or something, but I wouldn't get that tended to without a second opinion.
And I won't get that tended to until I have a job. At the moment, I'm in the red in more ways than eight and I'm essentially starting my life over again, so it's a long road ahead. If I hadn't been here before, I'd be really depressed. But since I have, I'm only moderately depressed.
Uhoh- engine lights aren't fun at all :( On the bright side - you know since you made it through this once you can do it again! Well, it's kind of a bright side.
aw man! i'm sorry! that's why we gave up on credit cards altogether (after paying $7freaking56 for a stupid broken a/c fan belt, motor, and weird little parts on our house) and decided if we don't have the cash, it doesn't get fixed. This has forced us to save money for such emergencies, instead of 'relying' on credit lines. And we live without a lot of crap we don't really need. We've been very fortunate with cars.....it seems our vehicles have had the grace to wait until David gets and unexpected bonus at work to break down. If something happened to his car, he'd have to take mine or carpool. If we only had one car, he'd carpool. I wish we had a mass transit system that would take him into Tampa for work. In Ft. Lauderdale he could drive or take the bus to the Tri-Rail, get on that, and ride it all the way to West Palm Beach. Then he'd get on another bus that would take him to the airport. Perfect. I don't know why we don't have such a system here, with so many commuters in the area.
Yeah my policy up until a few days ago was to only use my debit card for everything, which was working fine until my car. Well actually the major doctor's bills I've been stuck with for the past five months haven't been helping. I'm using the coolest website ever to keep track of my money - mint.com - and according to them I've spent 19% of my income on home stuff (rent, utilities) and 18% on doctor's bills. This is why I'm so anxious for a new healthcare system :)
Honestly once my cards are paid off I'm sticking with that - only using them for big purchases, and paying them off asap. It's a slippery slope. (And btw, this is why high schools should teach personal finance instead of useless PE classes - 18 year olds should be able to balance a checkbook and read the fine print on a credit card, and the importance of budgeting should be stressed long before the age of 25. Ugh. Let's fix public schools!)
I was talking to my mom today and a friend of hers.....When my dad was out of work when I was in high school, before his business got started up, they were paying $1200 a month out of pocket for health insurance for the four of us. I had no idea! I had no idea we were dirt poor then, either, because they never talked about how little money they had, just how to budget, etc. The amazing part is they've never had any debt, outside of their mortgage. The lady we were talking with has been going through a seriously bad time....Her husband retired from the FHP about five or six years ago and NONE of his benefits cover her, even though they've been married for like 30 something years. The benefits barely cover him, so they pay $1300 out of pocket for health insurance for both of them! They pretty much have custody of their two granddaughters and thank God for Florida KidCare because otherwise the girls wouldn't be covered, either, and would add to their already outstanding healthcare coverage costs. We pay almost $200 a month for our health

You're welcome! He's a cool guy, and his shop is within walking/bus distance to the Galleria, so you could drop your car off and shop while you wait :)
Lol, my credit card did the same thing to me. I paid it down a bunch, and they slashed my limit to JUST above where I paid it off--- and I was at no time ANYWHERE near my limit. Then, JUST today, after slashing my limit (and me not being informed until about 2 weeks later by mail) and me spending about 40 dollars on my credit card, they put a notice on my credit report that I'm over my credit limit. They suck at life and deserve to die.
Oh crap. Is it an amex card? Cause that sounds suspiciously like what Amex is doing to me. I just sent them a message saying "where the hell is the letter you said you were sending me?" because it's about two weeks late. Seriously, all I got was an email saying they're slashing it, and then they said they'd be sending me a letter that explained why, and then apparently neglected to send the letter. Jerks.
I hope your issue gets sorted out! I don't think anyone is going to come through this recession with their credit line intact. :(
