This is me, suppressing rage at the super-long comment I just wrote, only to have yahoo lose the whole thing. Grr. Let's try it again:

Yay Friday! My first week at my new job has been so tough that I didn't even notice I'd gotten sick. Sniffles suck.

The fantastical parts of the book really encompass the city they live in (which was built by an ancient group of people, now gone, who possessed powers greater than a normal human's) and a guild of bondsmagi who can practice magic. Magic, and fantastical elements, aren't really the centerpiece of the book though. There's also alchemy, which is basically an awesome mix of chemistry and bioengineering - one character creates an orange that produces it's own liquor while ripening on the vine, and another character drinks an liquor that changes colors as you sip it.

As for August Rush, I was confused by two things - (SPOILER WARNING) 1) how did her father manage to (illegally!) give away her baby for adoption without her consent and 2) why didn't he (or she) look for each other sooner, when they clearly wanted to? He was able to find her in 5 seconds on the internet once he finally decided to - what stopped him from doing it sooner? Anyway, if I had kids around 8 or 10 yrs old I'd be cool with them watching this movie (despite Robin William's disturbing pedophile character) because at least it stressed creativity and has some pretty cool music.
