After much agonizing and analyzing (have I mentioned the OCD?) I've decided to take a writing class. Not just any class, but "Writing the One Hour Drama" through the UCLA Writers Extension Program.
My reasoning is thus:
-In the past year, I've discovered I enjoy writing very much. Now that I'm writing my own original television pilot, I feel like I need more guidance than I can find in a book.
-The problem: I have no real idea if I'm any good or not, and if I find out I'm not good I should work on improving before continuing to write at the same not-good-level.
-To find that out, I need interaction with real objective humans.
-While I'm at it, some kind of formal training would be nice. There are only so many books on writing for television that one can read. (Literally...there are very few good books written on the subject!)
-So...I need to take a class.
-If I'm going to spend outrageous amounts of money on a class, it better be damn good and possibly applicable to some sort of certificate program.
-Hence: UCLA. If I choose to (and boy is it expensive!) I can complete a Television Writing Certificate comprised of 6 classes, and this class would retroactively count towards those requirements.
Looks like this whole "bring my lunch to work" thing is going to continue well into the new year. That credit card bill won't pay itself, now will it?
