Title: Whose work is done
Summary: He's worked for scum before. This time's no different.
Author's Notes: Written for
mildredmilton, who wanted me to explain how I could fanwank Slade working for Dr. Light in Identity Crisis and write the story of what they did before the JL actually showed up.
Mildred? I think this meets your request. Let me know if it doesn't work.
Disclaimer: I do not own any characters described herein; DC has all.
When Doctor Light shows up, desperate past the bravado, and tries to hire him for a bodyguard Slade thinks hard about saying no.
He knows he can take on the League. That's not the point. The important thing here is that killing the capes is lousy for business.
That he has ethics, that he isn't like Deadshot or Cheshire or anyone else in this business, that he has better things to do than work for this waste of air.
He doesn't like Light. Doesn't respect the man.
But Slade's always known the heroes are in this so they can play God, and he doesn't feel like letting them get their way. Especially since if he does, they'll come after him eventually. He's got no plans to let anybody in his head again.
And then there's Rose. If he picks the side of the angels this time, he knows Light -- maybe Luthor, with this new Society he's heard about -- won't have problems going after her to get to him. She's not good enough to take them on yet.
He knows better than to trust League security.
He wouldn't do this job free, but for other people he'd charge less. He charges Light as much as the man will pay.
And starts planning.
He's got maybe two weeks before the League stops reeling and starts hunting. If he picks the battleground, he'll have time to set it up and get everything ready. Best time to leak Light's location will be next week.
He doesn't want Rose anywhere near the man.
He doesn't have anywhere safe to send her anymore, and he feels the lack of options closing him in like a mined field.
If he can't send her to someone else, he'll just have to keep her even closer.
It's basic security to have Light nearby so if Slade's misjudged, Deathstroke can do his job. They stay in the place he's picked, and Light sleeps in the room next door.
Slade always sleeps with a weapon, but this time he doesn't sleep at all. Staying awake, he can hear Rose breathing from the other bed and Light's panicky heartbeat twelve feet over.
Slade's had jobs where whoever he was guarding tried to *talk* to him, make conversation. He's grateful Light doesn't do that.
If the man tried to act like they were friends, or even allies, the League might not need to bother hunting him down.
The waiting times are always the worst. He spends this one training Rose, showing her how to set up the C-4 in the ground and letting her figure out what it's for. Girl's getting good.
He tells her he's proud of her and tries to ignore the way he can *feel* Light watching how she moves. He knows the man won't so much as try to touch her as long as Deathstroke's needed.
The League's taken the bait and they're coming. He sends Rose to a nearby hotel. He doesn't want her in this.
Not yet.
Light stinks of fear and rage, but he's pretending calm. Doing a decent job of it, too.
Slade just sharpens his sword and waits.
